ColorCabana's Frequently Asked Questions

What type of files can I send over to colorcabana.com?

We recommend saving as a Press Quality PDF with bleeds.
Our PDF workflow system speeds up production and turn-around times. We recommend that you send PDFs with outlined fonts if possible to avoid any font issues that may cause delays. Remember to add crop marks and flatten your files before uploading. You may also send the file in the following types: high res jpg, psd, or eps.

What color mode should my file be in?

CMYK for offset color printing. If you send us an RGB file, there is a strong chance that a color shift may occur and you may not be satisfied with your job. (approximate rendering below)

2rgb rgb

2rgb cmyk cmyk

What resolution should my file be in?

300dpi or more at final print size. Lower resolution may result in pixelation and quality loss. Low resolution files may be flagged or will be placed on hold until we receive new files, slowing your turn-around.

How should I set up bleeds and crop marks?

Use .125" bleed and crop marks when creating your artwork. Bleed must extend past the cut-line and will be trimmed from the product during the final cutting phase. When the image is required to extend all the way to the edge, bleed is needed to preserve the finished look and the quality of the final product.

Please keep all text at least 0.125" inside the cut-line. When sending an .eps or .pdf, make sure you include crop marks so we can cut the job correctly.

Does colorcabana.com accept jobs with borders?

YES  but if the border is too close to the cutline, it may be cut off-center slightly. We cut through many sheets at a time, so watch your borders to avoid an unwanted mistake.

How should I set up my file for proper rotation?

ColorCabana.com requires Print Ready files with proper rotation. Files submitted are printed HEAD to HEAD as-is based off your files. Make sure to set up your files so that when we print them HEAD to HEAD the final product will read the way you would like. Also, front and back files need to be set up either both sides vertically or both sides horizontally.

How can I avoid transparency issues?

Any transparency issue can be resolved before saving your file. To prevent this, never use shadows, glows, or any other transparency (image or otherwise) on top of a spot color. Always convert your spot color to CMYK and flatten before sending.

Should I send a proof or sample file?

When sending artwork, do not send extra files, like proofs or samples, because they might get printed. Only send the files you need printed. Unless requested by one of our employees, DO NOT send files that you do not want printed.

What is overprint and how can it affect my job?

Primarily used to intentionally overlap inks for a number of reasons, overprint can cause unexpected results. We suggest that you turn all overprint objects off before submitting your files.

Can I submit front and back artwork in the same file?

YES but only in the case of PDFs. Each side must be its own page at the proper print size to include crops and bleeds. We specifically are set up to process one side at a time, and this requires that each side of a job must eventually be on a separate file.

How can I make sure that blues do not come out purple?

When using a blue in your design, always make sure to leave at least a 30% difference in your Cyan and Magenta values. Blue is close to purple in the CMYK spectrum. Remember, use a low amount of magenta whenever using high amounts of cyan to avoid purple.

How do I export a PDF correctly for printing?

When exporting from any program such as Indesign or Illustrator, use these settings to make sure your .PDF files export correctly.

How do I get a grayscale image to print correctly in a CMYK document?

Grayscale images that are converted to CMYK will have a color shift in the final print. That shift may be green or yellow. Always check the CMYK values of your grayscale in the final CMYK document. If there are other values other than K in your grayscale image, there is a chance that the color will vary. To eliminate all values other than K, use your Channel Mixer (adjustment layer) in Photoshop, then click "Monochrome" and adjust accordingly.

What is rich black and how can I create it?

Rich black is an ink mixture of solid black, 100% K, with additional CMY ink values. This results in a darker tone than black ink alone. If you print black alone as 100% K, the resulting black may not be as dark as you might like, especially in large coverage areas. We recommend using a combination of C-40 M-30 Y-20 K-100 This will give you a deep, dark, rich black.

Why do my foldover business cards sometimes crack at the fold?

Cracking of the edges of a business card sometimes occurs when the card contains high values of ink, as in dark colors. This usually happens on a small amount of cards in the run. To prevent this, use lighter colors or if you must use dark colors, use as little ink as possible.

What is banding?

Many things can cause banding. Banding can be caused by the program that it is exported from, such as Indesign or Corel. Also, too many gradient steps, for example going from a very light color to a dark color, in a small area will cause banding. To prevent this, check your digital files before sending. If you use a gradient, make sure it has enough room for a smooth transition.

How do I use colorcabana.com certified file setup templates?

Our Certified Templates are a great tool to create artwork that can be printed faster, easier, and more accurately. If you are using Illustrator, you can use our specialized EPS templates. If you are using something other than Illustrator, download the JPG version. Here is what each of the lines mean inside the template:

These templates will help you identify where the cut line, bleed line, and safety line, are located along with other information so you can design your art correctly. Some of our templates are labeled as OUT and IN. This means that there is some folding involved with the template. OUT means the FRONT of the job and IN means the BACK. During the upload part of your order, remember that OUT is the FRONT and IN is the BACK.

How do I set up a plastic card job?

The opaque white plastic cards (left) are solid white and not transparent at all. Design your cards exactly the way you would a standard business card. Keep in mind that plastic cards come with 1/4" rounded corners so keep this in mind when designing.

What is ColorCabana.com's standard round corner radius?

We offer 1/4" round corners to all of our customers as the standard.  1/8” round corners is also available upon special request.

Do I need to impose my business cards or promo cards 4-up or 8-up to a sheet?

NO. Please send us a single layout of your job unimposed, we will handle the imposition on our end.

Will you match a sample I print out on my own printer, or a previously printed sample?

At ColorCabana.com, part of the way we offer fast turnaround and great pricing is by printing to a "pleasing eye color" standard, using standard ink densities. Therefore, there is no guarantee that your finished piece will approximate your printed sample. This is due in part to the widely varying results from different output devices including inkjet and laser printers, continuous tone proofing devices, high-resolution film-based proofs, and different than true offset lithography. Even from one commercial printing firm to another, there can be significant differences in results. In particular, inkjet and laser prints are known to look substantially different than true offset lithography.

How well will my job match what I see on my monitor?

Most people are surprised at how well their job matches what they see. But because of wide differences in monitor calibration and the different technologies used, some printed colors may not exactly match the colors on a your specific monitor. We do our best to make your job look good.

Do you offer hard copy proofs?

ColorCabana.com does not offer hard copy proofs. We rely on our technology and color calibration to offer the best color possible while still keeping our prices low. Color matching services are available through our parent company - Martin Design, but color matching can be costly at times and may not be feasible for smaller print orders.

Can I request spot color?

Unfortunately we do not offer spot color or 1-2 color printing. We print using a 4-color process, meaning that all of our products are printed with Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black inks. We do not use any inks other than CMYK.

What line screen do you print with?

We print with a 200 line screen (Lines Per Inch).

Can I place an order for a custom size if I order online?

Currently we are unable to accept custom size orders through the online ordering system. However, you may request a custom quote and specify the size, quantity and stock needed and we will quote your order. Because custom sizes, require additional time and may require additional plate space, price increases may occur and may be significantly different than similar sizes offered through our website.

What paper stock do you print on?

Can I use my own fedex or ups shipping account to ship my order?

NO. Our free ground shipping is through UPS. We do reserve the right to subsittute Fedex ground shipping based on overall rate and shipping time to destination. All expedited shipping is done through UPS and may not be substitued. This allows us to keep accurate tracking records of all order leaving our facilities.

How accurate is the delivery date calculator at check-out?

The delivery date calcuator give a date based on the highest number of production business days for that particular item. It tracts weekends and major holidays based on UPS and/or FEDEX calendars which are not included in the business day estimate.

Often times, we are able to produce and ship your product in a shorter amount of time thus being able to ship it out and have it delivered sooner to you than what the delivery date calculator specified.

Why don't you offer 1-2 color printing and additional paper stock options?

We strive to offer some of the best quality, prcing and value when it oomes to full-color printing. Limiting our printing to full-color only and our stock options and finishes down helps us keep presses continually running without having to stop frequently to clean out and swap inks and/or stocks. This save us time, overhead, allows us greater discounts on purchased stocks and ultimately allows us to pass those savings unto you.
